The Importance of Dental Care

Good oral health is an important part of your pet's overall health. Dental disease affects approximately 85% of dogs and cats over 1 year of age. Every day you make choices regarding your pet`s nutrition, level of exercise and overall well-being. Dental health care is a key component in your pet`s health. Improved oral health care can reduce the discomfort and medical problems that accompany periodontal disease:

  • Bad Breath
  • Inflamed/swollen gums
  • Drooling, difficulty chewing
  • Loss of teeth
  • Bacterial infections that can spread to vital organs

How to prevent periodontal disease:

  • Daily brushing
  • Schedule a dental (and overall) health checkup
  • If needed a prophylaxis (dental cleaning) to remove tartar and plaque buildup and any unhealthy teeth present in the mouth.

Here are Before & After prophylaxis (Dental Cleaning) in a dog (top pictures)

Heartworm & Tick Facts

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets.

The mosquito plays an essential role in the heartworm life cycle.

Heartworm Life Cycle:

Ticks arrive in two waves a year, called tick blooms. The first bloom is usually in May/June, when it is cooler and damp. July and August in a typical year will be too hot and dry for them. They’re still around, but they just aren’t searching for Fluffy and Fido. The second bloom comes in September/October, again when the days are generally between 15-22 degrees and it is a bit more damp.

Don't forget heartworm and tick preventive this spring. Here at Linden Ridge Animal Hospital we carry a variety of heartworm and tick prevention to suit every pet.

Discuss with your veterinarian to see what is the best prevention for your dog.
